Session 04 — The Buried Library

The party parts ways with the survivors of Heron and follows Harland Ashworth's cipher to the Voss estate — where his hidden benefactor reveals a secret cellar library, and the dead man's own journals point the way beyond the walls to a ruined city called Calthar, a warforged that looks like EMBR, and a stolen artifact locked away in the Fold.

Date played: 2026-06-22 System: D&D 5e Duration: ~2h 38m Story: Session 04 — Story

At a Glance

  • The party wakes from a night in the forest after fleeing Heron. Those who slept dreamed of the burning. EMBR and Buddy — both warforged, both sleepless — kept watch.
  • Decoding Harland's journal points them to the Voss estate. They travel days on horseback, stopping first at the canton of Halvaran to part ways with Buddy, Sable, Maret, and Orvin — leaving them with Orvin, who will begin rebuilding his network of safehouses. They rent one-way horses.
  • The Voss estate is a grand but decrepit sprawl, unmaintained, marked by fresh hoofprints and footprints. Vivienne and Rookk approach the front door announced with high-noble formality; the others hide nearby.
  • They meet Seraphine Voss, lady of the estate — standoffish, guarded, and (they learn) a magic user in her own right. She knew Harland Ashworth. On learning Vivienne is his granddaughter, she reveals a secret door in her wine cellar that slides open to a staircase descending into a hidden underground library.
  • The library is Harland's secret research collection — dust, oil sconces, leather-bound books, ink pots, bundles of loose notes. Seraphine does not descend; she has always kept out of his papers.
  • At the far end sits a brass telescope jutting up a narrow shaft, capped with a strange magic lens — look through it and the ever-cloudy sky of Caligo becomes a cloudless blue. Jorath pries the lens free and pockets it. Once attuned, it sees through natural clouds, fog, and even darkness.
  • EMBR, hunting for secret switches, instead finds a bundle of sketches: a warforged frame with a black-purplish chitin left arm threading through the skeleton, replacing it from within — unmistakably like his own "Lefty." Harland's note: "This material does not merely adhere — it integrates. The original arm is almost entirely gone. I cannot determine whether what remains is still the same construct. I'm not sure that's even the right question."
  • Vivienne reads the journals chronologically. Early entries: careful linguistic study of the high-elvish sigils carved into Kalanthar (the outer wall), confirming again that the wall stood before the first attack — the covenant is not a response, it is a preparation. Later entries grow faster, more urgent, more scribbled — field notes from a man racing against time.
  • The turning point: Harland prepared to cross the wall into the wastelands, following a single constellation to a ruined city he calls Calthar (also heard as Kaelothar) — an advanced civilization now in ruins, holding preserved warforged frames fused with biological material.
  • Calthar hides a sealed lower level requiring a specific key/artifact. Harland traced that artifact to the Crail estate (also Krell/Kreole) — a wealthy ex-garrison family in the Fold, collectors who had no idea what they were sitting on. They refused to sell. His last entry, ~20 years ago, records him leaving on a second journey to Calthar, meaning to retrieve the artifact "later." He never returned.
  • Upstairs, Valdren, Jorath, and Rookk question Seraphine: Harland called the god-king a "Deceiver," grew increasingly angry and distrustful, and would put everything under a telescope — even the stonework of a household — to verify it was real. He packed heavily 20 years ago, seemed excited, told no one where he went, and vanished.
  • Decision: to reach Calthar, they need the artifact from the Crail estate in the Fold. Vivienne Sends a message to her brother about the Crails (reply: "We know of them. We are not enemies nor friends. Why do you ask?").
  • Jorath animal-messengers an owl to Orvin, who points them to Mira Solbin — a cartage-and-transit smuggler in the canton of Ashmark, near the second wall Meranthas.
  • They ride through the night (Jorath navigating by the magic lens), avoiding garrison patrols, to Ashmark — a functional, uniformed checkpoint canton with heavy garrison presence. Vivienne rides in on Jorath (in horse form), passing the gate guards with a fake name on a natural-20 deception.
  • They meet Mira at the Gateside Inn, hire her for 12 silver, and she smuggles all five through the Meranthas checkpoint in a wealthy-traveler's carriage — blinds drawn, a bribe purse ready.
  • The session ends as the carriage rolls into the Fold: six-story architecture, dense crowds, far more soldiers, visible Inquisition presence, and propaganda banners hailing the god-king Rimalath. A heist looms.

Decisions Made

  • Part ways with the survivors at Halvaran. Rather than drag Buddy, Sable, Maret, and Orvin toward an unknown estate, the party leaves them with Orvin — who will use Halvaran (a canton unsympathetic to the Inquisition) as a base to rebuild his safehouse network. EMBR confirms Buddy feels safe staying.
  • Approach the Voss estate as nobility. Vivienne and Rookk take the front door with a high-noble announcement while the rest hide, watching for the reason behind all the fresh tracks.
  • Trust Seraphine — carefully. She was standoffish, but she knew Harland. Vivienne reveals her lineage, which unlocks the cellar library.
  • Take the magic lens. Jorath pries it from the telescope. "Lady Seraphine probably won't miss this." It becomes the party's tool for star-navigation and seeing through darkness/fog.
  • Split the work in the library. Vivienne and EMBR stay below to read more thoroughly (Vivienne casting Leomund's Tiny Hut / Sanctum to shield the building from divination for a day); Jorath, Valdren, and Rookk go up to question Seraphine.
  • Go for the artifact first. The party confirms Harland's key is needed to open the sealed level of Calthar. Rather than strike out blind for the wastelands, they resolve to retrieve the artifact from the Crail estate before going beyond the walls.
  • Use family and the resistance to reach the Fold. Vivienne leverages her brother (her only sibling who knows she has magic) and her surviving noble legitimacy; the party leans on the resistance's smuggler, Mira, rather than bluffing a high-security checkpoint on foot.
  • Travel by night, navigate by the lens. Harder to be spotted; Jorath reads the unobstructed stars through the enchanted glass.
  • Ride in on Jorath. Rather than burn Invisibility on the whole party, Jorath wild-shapes into a blue constellation-dappled horse; Vivienne rides in as a noblewoman, deceives the gate guards, and secures Mira's room.

NPCs Encountered

  • Seraphine Voss — Lady of the Voss estate. Standoffish at first, for good reason: the estate has long been a place for people to disappear. A magic user who knew and sheltered Harland Ashworth, giving him a secret room for secret work and making a habit of never intruding on his papers. Shared his contempt for the god-king; the two would have lengthy discussions bashing the king. She recounts Harland's slide into anger, distrust, and obsessive scrutiny — and his final departure ~20 years ago, from which he never returned. Wishes Vivienne closure: "I never knew what happened to your grandfather, but I hope you either find him alive and well, or at least find some closure."
  • Mira Solbin — Mid-40s human woman, muscular and weathered, dark hair pinned back, hands calloused and scarred. Runs a legitimate cartage-and-transit business out of Ashmark with real contracts — and smuggles people through checkpoints for the resistance. Blunt, professional, apathetic-not-sympathetic to the cause but reliable. Smuggles the party into the Fold for 12 silver, bribe purse at the ready. "My business operates at all times of the day."
  • Harland Ashworth (posthumous, via journals) — Vivienne's grandfather. His voice in the notes decays from meticulous scholar to a man racing against time. Called the god-king a "Deceiver." Traveled beyond the walls to Calthar, sought the artifact at the Crail estate, and left ~20 years ago on a second journey, never to return. Status: missing, presumed dead.
  • Vivienne's brother (unnamed, via Sending) — The only sibling who knows Vivienne has magic. Replies about the Crails: "Dear sister — we know of them. We are not enemies nor friends. Why do you ask?" A possible family connection to leverage.
  • Orvin (offscreen, via owl) — Now rebuilding safehouses out of Halvaran. Directs the party to Mira Solbin.
  • The Gateside Inn barman — Older, compact, muscular; tends bar from a raised platform in the dead of night. Takes the "Solvon" name, gives back the silver, and quietly leads Jorath to Mira's room.

Factions Encountered

  • The Resistance — Its logistics arm on display: smugglers like Mira Solbin who move people through checkpoints. Payment isn't a fee for services so much as fuel — gold is what makes the resistance work better. The party are high-ranking (and wanted) members by default.
  • The Inquisition / The Regime — Not directly encountered, but its shadow deepens as the party enters the Fold: uniformed patrols, garrison towers atop Meranthas, and propaganda banners hailing the god-king Rimalath. The regime feels closer here.
  • The Crail estate — A wealthy ex-garrison military family in the Fold, collectors of oddities, unknowingly holding an artifact from beyond the walls. Not a faction so much as the party's next target.

Locations

  • Voss Estate — A grand, decrepit sprawl of unmaintained structures, marked by recent traffic. Home of Seraphine Voss and, beneath it, Harland's secret cellar library. Long a haven for people who need to disappear.
  • The Buried Library — The hidden underground room beneath the Voss wine cellar. A single large chamber with a domed observatory alcove holding a brass telescope (fitted with the magic lens), a desk, and a chaotic, roughly chronological collection of Harland Ashworth's journals, sketches, and field notes.
  • Halvaran — Edge canton, unsympathetic to the Inquisition, where the party safely discusses plans and leaves the Heron survivors with Orvin. No guards at its gate — nothing important enough to guard.
  • Ashmark — A functional, unsentimental checkpoint canton pressed against the second wall, Meranthas. Heavy garrison presence, guards atop the walls, gas-lit streets nearly empty at 2 a.m. Home of the Gateside Inn and Mira Solbin's cartage business.
  • The Fold — The inner ring of Caligo, past the second wall. Six-story stone architecture, every space accounted for, dense crowds, far more soldiers, visible Inquisition presence, and regime propaganda. Everything the edge is not. The party enters it at session's end.
  • Calthar (also Kaelothar) — A ruined city of an advanced civilization out in the wastelands beyond the walls, reachable only by following a specific constellation. Holds preserved warforged frames fused with biological material and a sealed lower level requiring a key/artifact. Harland's obsession; the party's ultimate destination.

New Worldbuilding

  • The Voss estate is a place for people to disappear. Long a haven where people hide out or escape entirely. Harland took over a secret room there, at request, for his research — Seraphine facilitated it and asked no questions.
  • The magic lens. A brass-ringed, faintly metallic ground disc — neither stone nor glass. Fixed atop the telescope, it lets the viewer see through Caligo's perpetual cloud cover to a clear night sky. Once attuned, it also sees through natural fog and even darkness to a significant degree. It does not magnify. Invaluable for star-navigation toward Calthar.
  • Calthar (Kaelothar) — the ruined city beyond the walls. An advanced society now in ruins, out in the wastelands, navigable only by a single constellation. Architecture unlike anything in Caligo. Holds preserved, comatose warforged frames strung up like test subjects, fused with biological material. Jorath speculates the god-king himself may have hailed from Calthar — or that this was once elven land before the elves were exterminated.
  • The chitin material — warforged fused with living matter. Harland's most careful sketches document a warforged frame whose left arm is a black-purplish chitin that threads through and replaces the skeleton from within — not adhering to the surface but rebuilding it. His note: "This material does not merely adhere — it integrates… I cannot determine whether what remains is still the same construct." This mirrors EMBR's own Lefty: his left arm (insectoid black plating) and left eye, with a "rooted cancer" growing through his face.
  • The sealed level and the artifact/key. Calthar's lower ruins are locked behind a mechanism requiring a specific artifact. Harland identified that artifact — held (unknowingly) by the Crail estate, an ex-garrison collector family in the Fold. They refused to cooperate/sell. The artifact is (as of ~20 years ago) still there.
  • Harland called the king a "Deceiver." Beyond ordinary hatred of an oppressive regime, Harland's contempt was specific: he believed the founding covenant of Caligo is a lie. Over time he grew angry, distrustful, and obsessively suspicious — scrutinizing even ordinary stonework "to verify it was real."
  • Harland's timeline. His last journal entry is ~20 years old. He made a first, short trip (a month or two) to Calthar, returned, then prepared a second journey — the one he never came back from.
  • The three walls of Caligo. Kalanthar (outermost, the edge), Meranthas / Mintharis (the second wall, gating the Fold), and a third innermost wall around the throne. Crossing Meranthas into the Fold requires a robust, high-security checkpoint; edge-dwellers get looked at with suspicion.
  • Ways through the walls. Under — via storm drains, dangerous, prone to drowning, the route ash-walkers and wasteland creatures use to slip in. Over — via a set of seldom-used but operational elevators around Kalanthar, accessible with magic, garrison connections, or power. Jorath's people came in this way.
  • The Fold vs. the edge. The Fold is the inner ring of nobility and wealth: towering architecture, dense population, uniformed regular patrols, overt Inquisition presence, and regime propaganda hailing the god-king. The edge, by contrast, is neglected, lightly patrolled, and quietly resistant.
  • Being "wanted" in the edge. The party are wanted both by default (high-ranking resistance) and for their actions. But common folk in the edge largely won't report resistance members — most just want to mind their own business. The danger is the occasional zealot, and the far heavier surveillance of the Fold.
  • The resistance runs on gold. Smuggling isn't strictly fee-for-service; contributing gold buys exclusive access and makes the whole network function better.

Combat Highlight

No combat this session — it was an exposition-and-travel session (as the GM put it, "much exposition, much lore"). The tension came from checkpoints and deception rather than blades:

  • Vivienne at the Ashmark gate: Rode in on Jorath (horse form), gave the guards a fabricated name on a natural-20 deception (+8 modifier). They didn't blink. Clean entry.
  • The Meranthas checkpoint: Mira smuggled all five through the second wall in a wealthy-traveler's carriage, blinds drawn, bribe purse in hand. Guards encircled and talked but never forced the door open. The gates rose; the carriage rolled into the Fold uncontested.
  • A near-miss of temper: Valdren, on being told a jumpy guard might peek in, offered to "club him." Mira: "Hold your violent tendencies — and only do so at my request."

Continuity State

Active Quests

  • [x] Reach the Voss estate. Decoded from Harland's journal, reached, and searched. Seraphine revealed the cellar library.
  • [x] Read and understand Harland's documents (first pass). Vivienne now has the big picture: linguistic study of Kalanthar → walls predate the Ruined → Calthar → the sealed level → the artifact at the Crail estate → his final, unreturned journey.
  • [ ] Retrieve the artifact from the Crail estate. A key needed to open Calthar's sealed lower level. Held by an ex-garrison collector family in the Fold. The party is now inside the Fold to plan a heist. (New primary objective.)
  • [ ] Reach Calthar (Kaelothar) beyond the walls. The ruined city Harland followed a constellation to. The party now holds both the star chart and the magic lens to navigate there.
  • [ ] Follow the star chart. Still in play; now paired with the magic lens for cloudless/dark navigation.
  • [ ] Uncover EMBR's origin. Harland's sketches document a warforged like EMBR's "Lefty." The chitin material and the comatose frames in Calthar may hold the answer to what EMBR is.
  • [ ] Find out what happened to Harland. Missing ~20 years, presumed dead. May be found (or his remains found) in the wastelands / at Calthar.
  • [ ] Decipher the omen. Poor little innocents get caught in the shadow of the raven. Still open from Session 01.

Key NPCs

  • Seraphine Voss — Ally (cautious). Magic user, knew Harland, gave the party free run of the library and provisions for the road. Wishes Vivienne closure.
  • Mira Solbin — Contracted ally. Smuggler; got the party into the Fold. Apathetic to the cause but professional and reliable. Now escorting them toward the Crail estate.
  • Vivienne's brother — Neutral family contact. Knows the Crails ("not enemies nor friends"). A possible in for reaching the Fold's nobility.
  • Orvin — Safe. Rebuilding his safehouse network from Halvaran. Now the party's relay contact; has a window open for messenger birds.
  • Buddy — Safe with Orvin in Halvaran. Still deteriorating; left behind as too much of a liability for this leg.
  • Sable — Safe with Orvin in Halvaran. Escalating, uncontrolled magic. Left behind.
  • Maret — Safe with Orvin in Halvaran.
  • Harland Ashworth — Missing ~20 years, presumed dead. Left a trail to Calthar.

Open Plot Threads

  • The artifact/key at the Crail estate — how to get it (heist / smash-and-grab / family connection via Vivienne's brother), and what it unlocks in Calthar.
  • Calthar / Kaelothar — a ruined advanced civilization beyond the walls. Was it elven land before the elves were exterminated? Did the god-king Rimalath hail from there?
  • EMBR's origin — the chitin material that "integrates," the comatose warforged frames, and Harland's sketches of a frame like Lefty. What is EMBR, and who made him?
  • Harland's fate — did he reach Calthar's sealed level without the key? Did he die out there? Are his bones (or he) still beyond the walls?
  • The covenant of Caligo is a preparation, not a response — confirmed a second time. Preparation for what? Why did Harland call the king a "Deceiver"?
  • The party is now inside the Fold — the most surveilled, Inquisition-heavy environment they've entered. Most of them are wanted, and disguise options are thin.
  • Sable's escalating magic — deferred but not resolved; she's now with Orvin, away from the party.

Party Resources

  • Magic lens — sees through clouds/fog; through darkness once attuned. Held by Jorath. Used for night navigation toward Calthar.
  • Harland's star chart — held by Jorath; points along a constellation to Calthar.
  • Harland's journals, sketches, and field notes — packed up and carried for reference; include the warforged/chitin sketches and the Calthar field notes.
  • Rented horses (one-way) — now inside the Fold via Mira's carriage; Argentus tied to the back and led in.
  • Vivienne — spent a 4th-level slot (Sanctum/Tiny Hut in the library), a Sending to her brother, Detect Magic and Identify (ritual/casting) on the lens. +8 Deception; natural 20 at the Ashmark gate.
  • Jorath — Wild Shape (horse), multiple attempts at Animal Messenger (owl) until one succeeded, cast Guidance. Holds the lens and star chart.
  • Valdren — completed a long rest; no spell slots noted spent. Taught EMBR poker while waiting.
  • Coin — party is low. Vivienne fronted the 12 silver to Mira. Jorath ~20 gold, Valdren ~9. A spyglass (1000 gp) noted as unaffordable; the magic lens is the party's substitute.
  • The party is inside the Fold, in Mira's carriage, en route toward the Crail estate. No safe house yet; Mira can only offer inns that are apathetic, not sympathetic.
