The Fold

The most surveilled, Inquisition-heavy environment the party has yet entered.

Overview

The Fold lies beyond the second wall of Meranthas — a wealthier, far more controlled region than the edge cantons, dense with garrison and Inquisition presence and plastered with the god-king's propaganda banners. Most of the party is wanted, and disguise options here are thin. They entered by smuggling themselves through the Meranthas checkpoint in Mira Solbin's carriage.

Why the Party Is Here

The Fold holds the Crail Estate — the home of Lord Oswin Crail, who possesses an artifact/key that Harland Ashworth traced here 20 years ago. That key is required to open the sealed lower level of Calthar. The Crails had no idea what they were sitting on and refused to sell. The party has come to take it.

The District by Daylight

Four- and five-storey townhouses sharing walls, every scrap of space accounted for. Gas lamps snuffed at dawn by lamplighters whose whole trade is lamps. Shopping districts with bakeries, clothiers, and apothecaries. Soldiers throughout. A rudimentary sewer system runs beneath it. Beggars are not tolerated in the wealthy quarters — a guard will club one rather than move them along.

Wealth here is measured in emptiness: where every other building shares walls, the truly rich afford grass, a fence, and distance from their neighbours.

Dangers

  • Magic is a liability. Arcane signatures scale with spell level. Cantrips and first-level workings are near-invisible; second-level spells can trip a sensitive nearby, and in a city this dense you can never know who is nearby.
  • The garrison-to-private-security pipeline. Retired garrison men take work guarding wealthy estates and keep their old friendships. Street patrolmen and private house guards nod to each other as former colleagues — so no alarm here is ever anonymous.
  • The resistance thins toward the throne. The silent signals and friendly shopfronts that mark resistance-adjacent business in the edge do not exist this deep in.

Role in Sessions

  • Session 04 — The party was smuggled through the Meranthas checkpoint at session's end, rolling in under the god-king's banners.
  • Session 05 — Dropped near the Crail estate at dawn; a full day of surveillance, then the heist.
  • Session 06 — The artifact was taken from the Crail estate.
  • Session 07 — Lord Crail was killed (off the recording), a crowd gathered at his gates, and Mira smuggled the party back out through Meranthas. Crail's dead head named the ID Seven Correctional Annex, somewhere in the Fold.

Status

Left behind — for now. A lord has been murdered here. Valdren's best lead, the ID Seven Correctional Annex, is inside.
