Session 06 — Vessel That Was Asleep

Two guards die in two rooms on the second floor of the Crail house. In the trophy room the party finds what they came for — a grey rectangular stone that is far too light, its faces covered in a script no one has ever seen. They also find something nobody was looking for: a display case of household trinkets taken during Inquisition raids, each with a name and an age beside it, and among them the personal effects of Valdren's mother, brother, and sister. The clock runs out on the sixth segment. The front gate creaks open. Lord Crail is home.

Date played: 2026-08-10 System: D&D 5e Duration: ~2h 32m Story: Session 06 — Story

At a Glance

  • The session opens exactly where Session 05 ended. It is roughly 10:30 p.m. The party is on the second-floor landing of the Crail estate with the two private gate guards climbing the stairs behind them, having glimpsed movement. Heat sits at 3 of 6uneasy. Jorath's Pass Without Trace is roughly half expired.
  • The upstairs hallway offers several doors with lamplight behind them and, at the far left end, a closed door with light flickering underneath — the trophy room they marked from the street. There are also stairs continuing to a third floor, unused.
  • Ducking sideways, the party passes an open guest bedroom where a maid — dark hair tied back tight, plain dark dress — is making a bed with her back to the door. It is the first look any of them get at what the household staff wear, which is the only thing Vivienne needed.
  • They slip into the unlit room across the hall: a library-den — walls of books, a dry bar, a cold hearth, couches around a would-be fire, a small writing desk. The only portrait in the room is Lord Crail himself, in his finest clothes. No family pets, no children, nothing soft.
  • The party spends a clock segment deliberately hiding to bleed off heat. It does not work. Rookk rolls a natural 1, clips the dry bar while trying to fold himself behind it, and knocks a bottle onto the floor. It is a sturdy bottle — a dull thud, not shattering glass — so the heat does not climb, but the sound brings a guard straight to the door.
  • Vivienne recasts Disguise Self, becoming a small, haggard old maid, and meets the guard in the doorway alone while the others take cover. Valdren tucks himself behind the door hinge. It is the same guard who clubbed her with a halberd that morning — she recognizes the unlit cigar bitten between his teeth, and Valdren catches the smell of tobacco as he passes.
  • She plays it perfectly in character — "What are you going to tattle on me now, too?", brushing him off like an old woman with work to finish before the house is shut up for the night. He stammers. Then he inspects her closely, rolls a natural 17, and sees straight through the illusion: he clocks illusory magic. His hand moves to his weapon.
  • Valdren shuts the door behind him. "Gotcha, bitch." The guard is surprised; the party gets a free round.
  • Guard 1 dies in under ten seconds. Vivienne casts Light on the unlit cigar in his mouth, detonating a flare in his face. Jorath's guiding bolt blisters and scorches him; Rookk opens his front with a longsword; EMBR — not raging, fully himself for the first time in a long while — hammers him over an armchair, then brings the warhammer down on his chest until the breastplate buckles inward and he coughs blood. Valdren flips his war pick to pick mode and drives it through the guard's eye.
  • Cleanup: Jorath uses Shape Water to gather the blood into a floating orb and dump it out a window; Valdren wedges the corpse behind a blanket trunk, and when the leg keeps popping back out, snaps it at the knee and folds it in. The clock ticks, but the kill was clean enough that heat stays at 3.
  • Jorath wild shapes into a spider and scouts under the trophy room door. Inside: an enormous room with stairs to an elevated catwalk ten feet up, ringed by rolling bookshelves and glass cases — and the second gate guard pacing between them. Jorath signals with his legs and, once, with a web sign (the 2024 spider form's 50-word message web) — the semaphore is thoroughly garbled, but the party gets the gist.
  • Valdren blows the entry. Trying to ease the door open, he hears a squelch underfoot, panics that he has crushed Jorath, loses his balance, and falls into the door — which flies open and bangs off the wall. The remaining guard whirls. No surprise this time.
  • The party piles into the trophy room and fights to keep the guard from screaming. Every guard in the house wears a whistle around his neck — if this one gets a hand free, he blows for reinforcements. Rookk misses two grapples. EMBR lets Lefty take over, rages, grows huge, and palms the man's entire face, lifting him off the ground. The guard fails his escape.
  • With the whistle smothered, they butcher him. EMBR hacks at his chest with a stowed hand axe (natural 20) while holding him aloft; Jorath vaults to the banister and lands another guiding bolt; Valdren body-shots him with the blunt side of the war pick; Rookk finishes him — a slash across the midsection, then a drag of the longsword across the throat that opens an artery. EMBR feels him go limp and drops him.
  • The trophy room is a monument to Lord Crail's career. A garrison standard from his first command. A decommissioned ceremonial sword. Military prints and cases of medals. Mementos of the Ruined from beyond the walls, including a large claw in a case — big, but not the biggest thing in the room.
  • The artifact. Sitting in its own glass case as the room's centerpiece: a carved rectangular prism about the size of a very large book, dark grey with mineral striations that read as stone at a glance. Three of its faces are covered in dense, precise script no one recognizes. It is not a tool, not a weapon, not decorative. Vivienne casts Detect Magicno magical aura at all — yet she can see the thing faintly glowing anyway.
  • Vivienne casts Comprehend Languages on it. The script resolves — and it feels wrong to even attempt aloud, like Latin amplified into something her academic instincts recoil from. Three faces, three phrases repeated until they ran out of room:
    • "Vessel that was asleep."
    • "Account seven" — followed by a mark best translated as three.
    • "The first working knows its own."
  • Valdren finds the other collection. Deeper into the room, glass cases hold ordinary household items — mugs, quills, socks — each with a small metal plaque. One case is labelled "Civilian Relocation Operations." Beside every object: a name and an age. Age 25. Age 7. Age 50. These are trophies taken from homes the Inquisition emptied in the night.
  • And then he sees his family. A hair pin as fine as the Zau'tars could afford — Zibrisa. A wooden soldier carved by his fatherPhaerun. A piece of his mother Ilivarra's clothing. Their names on the plaques. Their ages on the night they were taken. He is carrying Zibrisa's rag doll on his person as he reads it.
  • Valdren takes the plaques and the items, stands shaking with his fists clenched, and holds himself together. "This cruel fucker might know where my family is. If we run across him, I need to ask him some questions." — followed immediately by "But I won't put what we're doing in jeopardy to do it." He asks the party to grab any papers on the Civilian Relocation Program.
  • Rookk searches the shelves and finds records — scrolls and tomes that look like actual documentation of the program rather than plaques: who it happened to, where it was done. He takes them. Valdren is too enraged to read and searches nothing.
  • Jorath reads the room correctly: this gallery is where Crail comes to feel proud. The real specifics — the operational documents — would be kept closer to the chest, in an office somewhere else in the house. He finds no fae relics.
  • Lefty reaches for the artifact. As EMBR approaches, his left arm begins drifting toward it on its own. When he smashes the glass case and grips the tablet in his left hand, it locks. He feels the chitin tendrils moving under his plating, wriggling along his skeleton, points digging into bone — actively growing toward his collarbone. His left eye burns full red. He cannot let go (Wisdom save, 7).
  • Jorath saves him. Recognizing he can never win a strength contest, he casts Calm Emotions; EMBR rolls a natural 20 on the Charisma save, so Jorath burns his Cosmic Omen (woe) reaction to drag it under the DC. Lefty's grip relaxes. EMBR passes the artifact off and physically removes himself to a corner, shaken.
  • What Lefty wanted was not rage — it was yearning. A pull toward assimilation: either to consume the artifact or to be consumed by it. Which direction is unclear.
  • The tablet is roughly pizza-box footprint, three or four boxes tall, weighs about 50 pounds, and is far too light for its size. Up close its material is not stone at all — an unidentifiable, faintly alien substance, and not obviously the same material as Lefty either. Jorath carries it.
  • The smashed glass raised heat to 4alarmed. The search consumed the sixth and final segment of the clock.
  • The front gate creaks open. Those near a front-facing window watch Lord Oswin Crail step down from his carriage, hand his coat to a butler, and stride in through the front door.
  • Session ends. The party is standing in the trophy room with two corpses, a shattered case, a bloodstained catwalk, the artifact, a bundle of Inquisition records, Valdren's family's stolen effects — and the lord of the house downstairs.

Decisions Made

  • Hide rather than run. Rather than sprint for the trophy room with guards on the stairs, the party spends a clock segment tucked into the library-den to let heat settle. It costs them time and gains them nothing — the dropped bottle brings a guard to the door.
  • Send Vivienne out as the help. With the maid's plain dark dress finally observed, Vivienne recasts Disguise Self as an old servant and takes the interaction alone rather than letting the party be found hiding. The bluff nearly works.
  • Kill instead of talk. The instant the guard perceives illusion magic, Valdren shuts the door and the party ambushes rather than negotiating, fleeing, or subduing. Guards are combatants under the standing rule; only unarmed staff get mercy.
  • Kill quietly, and clean. Blood gathered with Shape Water and poured out a window, body folded behind a trunk, leg broken to make it fit. The effort keeps heat at 3.
  • Scout with the spider, not the disguise. Jorath's wild shape replaces the plan to send Vivienne into the trophy room in servant's guise — the least risky body goes in first.
  • Smother the whistle before doing damage. Recognizing that a single blown whistle ends the heist, the party's opening priority is grappling and silencing the second guard rather than maximizing damage. EMBR's rage is spent on a grapple, not a hit.
  • Take the records, not just the prize. At Valdren's request, the party spends search time on the Civilian Relocation Operations literature — knowingly burning clock segments that are the only thing standing between them and Lord Crail's return.
  • Valdren holds the line on vengeance. Presented with proof that the man who owns this house catalogued his family as trophies, Valdren does not go berserk, does not wait to ambush Crail, and does not abandon the objective. He takes the plaques, states his intent, and explicitly refuses to jeopardize the mission.
  • Pull Lefty off the artifact. Jorath spends a spell and a Cosmic Omen to break EMBR's grip rather than let the arm keep its hold, and the tablet is handed to the druid to carry.

NPCs Encountered

  • Lord Oswin Crail — Arrives home at the very end of the session. Steps down from his carriage, hands his coat to a butler, walks in the front door. He does not yet know two of his guards are dead upstairs. This session establishes far more about him than Session 05 did: his trophy room contains a garrison standard from his first command, a decommissioned ceremonial sword, medals, prints, mementos of the Ruined — and a case of household objects taken from families during Inquisition "Civilian Relocation Operations," each labelled with a victim's name and age. He kept souvenirs of the people he disappeared. Among them are the effects of Valdren's mother, brother, and sister.
  • The first Crail gate guard (the ring-wearer / cigar-chewer) — Dead. The same man who put a halberd haft into Vivienne's skull that morning. Chews an unlit cigar; smells of tobacco. Perceptive enough to see through Disguise Self on close inspection. Killed in the library-den in under ten seconds, war pick through the eye, body hidden behind a blanket trunk.
  • The second Crail gate guardDead. Patrolling the trophy room catwalk between the rolling bookshelves. Panicked immediately on seeing the whole party. Grappled and silenced by a raging, enlarged EMBR; killed by Rookk with a cut across the throat.
  • The Crail maid — Dark hair tied back tightly, plain simple dark dress, making up a front-facing guest bedroom by oil lamp with her back to the door. Never noticed the party. Her uniform is what Vivienne's disguise is built from.
  • The Crail butler — Takes Lord Crail's coat at the door on his return.
  • Ilivarra, Phaerun, Zibrisa (absent; via their stolen possessions) — Valdren's mother, brother, and sister. Their personal effects — a piece of clothing, a wooden soldier carved by their father, a fine hair pin — are displayed under glass in Crail's Civilian Relocation Operations case with their names and their ages on the night they were taken. First hard evidence in the campaign that the Inquisition's records of Valdren's family exist, and that Crail was connected to the operation.
  • Harland Ashworth (posthumous, via research) — His conclusion that the artifact is normally kept at the estate is what keeps the party in the house rather than hunting Crail's person.

Factions Encountered

  • The Inquisition — Not present, but the session's true subject. "Civilian Relocation Operations" is now a named program with documented records and a trophy case. Crail did not merely serve; he collected. The party leaves the house with stolen paperwork about it.
  • The King's Inquisition — The abduction of the Zau'tar family, twelve years cold, acquires a physical location and a paper trail for the first time.
  • The Crail household — Down two private guards. The remaining staff are still working the upper floors, unaware.

Locations

  • Crail Estate — Second floor mapped this session. A long hallway with a runner rug, several lamp-lit rooms, a staircase continuing to a third floor, a front-facing guest bedroom (fancy bedding, armoire, oil lamp on the bedside table), a library-den opposite the trophy room side (books to the walls, dry bar, cold hearth, couches, small writing desk, portrait of Lord Crail), and at the far west end the trophy room.
  • The Crail trophy room — Far larger than expected. Ground level plus a staircase to an elevated catwalk roughly ten feet up, lined with rolling bookshelves and glass display cases. Contents: the artifact in its own central case; the Ruined claw; garrison standard; ceremonial sword; medals and military prints; and the Civilian Relocation Operations case. Its window still stands open to the night — the party's likeliest exit.

New Worldbuilding

  • The artifact is a tablet, and it speaks. A grey, striated rectangular prism about the size of a very large book — roughly a pizza box's footprint and three or four boxes tall, about 50 pounds, and far too light for its apparent material. Up close the substance is not identifiable as stone, metal, or anything else; it is also not obviously the same material as EMBR's chitin. It registers no magic under Detect Magic while nonetheless visibly glowing. Three faces bear a dense script that no one at the table recognizes, and that Vivienne — reading it through Comprehend Languages — instinctively refuses to speak aloud.
  • The three inscriptions, each repeated until the carver ran out of room:
    • "Vessel that was asleep" (large top face)
    • "Account seven" + a mark best rendered as three (narrow face)
    • "The first working knows its own" (third face)
  • "Civilian Relocation Operations." The Inquisition's internal name for the night raids. Crail kept a glass case of objects taken from the homes — mugs, quills, socks, hair pins, toys — each plaqued with the name and age of the person taken. This is the campaign's first proof that the disappearances were systematic, documented, and celebrated, and that participants were permitted personal trophies.
  • The gallery vs. the office. Jorath's read: the trophy room is where Crail goes to look back fondly. Operational documents would be kept elsewhere — an office, closer to the chest. There is more in this house than the party has found.
  • Crail's guards carry whistles. Every guard in the house wears one on a cord at the neck for calling reinforcements. Any escape from a grapple is an alarm.
  • Lefty wants the artifact — and the wanting is not rage. The chitin arm pulls toward the tablet on its own, locks onto it, and cannot be released by will. What EMBR feels is yearning for assimilation — either to consume the artifact or be consumed by it. In contact, the tendrils actively grow, migrating up under his plating toward his collarbone. Calm Emotions works on Lefty and not on EMBR — the arcane effect finds only the raging half, because EMBR himself is already the calm one. The two are magically distinguishable.
  • Disguise Self does not survive close inspection. A careful, unhurried look by an ordinary guard was enough to register illusory magic — not merely a bad disguise, but the presence of a spell.
  • The Ruined leave collectible remains. A claw large enough to fill a display case, and small enough that it is not even the centerpiece — from something that, by the standards of the Ruined, was not large.

Combat Highlight

Two ambushes, both won on silence rather than damage.

  • The library-den. Vivienne casts Light on the unlit cigar clenched in the guard's teeth, blowing a flare across his face; Valdren shuts the door and the man is surprised. Guiding bolt scorches him, Rookk's longsword opens his front (31 damage in), EMBR — pointedly not raging — sends him over an armchair and then caves his breastplate in with a downward hammer strike, bones cracking, blood in his mouth. Valdren flips his war pick and puts it through the eye. Under ten seconds, no heat gained.
  • The trophy room. No surprise round; the door banged off the wall. Rookk misses two grapples as the panicking guard ducks and shoves. EMBR gives Lefty the wheel, rages, grows to fill the space, and grabs the man's entire face in one hand, hauling his feet off the floor — the guard fails his escape and never reaches the whistle at his throat. EMBR hacks his chest with a hand axe (natural 20, 18 damage, blood and viscera raining down the stairs onto Rookk in the splash zone), Jorath lands a guiding bolt from the banister, Valdren body-shots him with the blunt side, and Rookk opens his throat — an arterial geyser, and he goes limp in EMBR's grip.
  • The real fight was EMBR versus his own arm. Wisdom save 7 — he could not make his left hand let go. Jorath's Calm Emotions plus a Cosmic Omen (woe) is what pried it open. The party won both combats without a scratch and nearly lost EMBR to a rock.

Continuity State

<details> <summary>Continuity State (for next session)</summary>

Active Quests

  • [x] Retrieve the artifact from the Crail estate. Acquired. A grey rectangular tablet, ~50 lb, three inscribed faces, currently carried by Jorath.
  • [ ] Escape the Crail estate. Immediate. Heat 4 of 6 (alarmed). All six clock segments spent. Two guards dead upstairs, a case smashed, blood on the trophy room floor and catwalk. Lord Crail has just walked in the front door. Known exits: the open trophy room window (second-floor drop; Rookk has 50 ft of rope), the cellar doors (padlock broken, chained from inside), the fence (loud), the service door (locked).
  • [ ] Decipher the artifact's inscriptions. "Vessel that was asleep." / "Account seven" + a mark reading as three. / "The first working knows its own." Script unknown to everyone including Vivienne. No magical aura, yet it glows.
  • [ ] Learn what Lefty wants with the artifact. Contact triggered involuntary grip, tendril growth toward EMBR's collarbone, and a yearning for assimilation.
  • [ ] Find Crail's office and the operational records. Jorath assesses that the real Civilian Relocation documents are kept elsewhere in the house, not in the gallery.
  • [ ] Find out what happened to Ilivarra, Phaerun, and Zibrisa. Newly urgent. Their possessions are in Crail's case with their names and ages. Valdren intends to interrogate Crail if the chance comes.
  • [ ] Reach Calthar beyond the walls. Star chart, magic lens, and now the artifact in hand.
  • [ ] Uncover EMBR's origin. Advanced obliquely — the artifact reacts to his grafted parts.
  • [ ] Find out what happened to Harland Ashworth. Untouched.
  • [ ] Decipher the omen. Poor little innocents get caught in the shadow of the raven. Open since Session 01.

Key NPCs

  • Lord Oswin CrailIn the house, on the ground floor, as of this moment. Just handed his coat to a butler. Ex-garrison, ex-Inquisition; participated in Civilian Relocation Operations and kept trophies from the families, including Valdren's. Does not yet know his guards are dead.
  • The two Crail gate guardsBoth dead. One folded behind a blanket trunk in the library-den (leg broken to fit); one on the trophy room catwalk stairs, throat opened, blood everywhere and not cleaned up.
  • The Crail butler — Ground floor, attending the lord.
  • The Crail maid — Second floor, making up a front-facing guest bedroom. Never saw the party.
  • The Crail household staff — Still working the upper floors, still unaware.
  • Ilivarra, Phaerun, Zibrisa — Taken twelve years ago. Their stolen effects and their names and ages are now in Valdren's possession.
  • Mira Solbin — Offscreen. Extraction still unarranged.
  • Seraphine Voss — Ally (cautious), offscreen.
  • Harland Ashworth — Missing ~20 years, presumed dead.

Open Plot Threads

  • The lord is home and the clock is empty. Heat 4/6, all six segments burned. There is no time left to buy.
  • Two bodies will be found. One hidden badly, one not hidden at all. Blood was cleaned "mostly successfully" in the den; the trophy room was not cleaned at all.
  • Crail may know where Valdren's family went. Valdren has stated he wants to question him and has explicitly declined to derail the heist to do it — for now.
  • The tablet wants EMBR, or EMBR's arm wants the tablet. Contact makes the chitin grow. The party has separated them by handing the artifact to Jorath, which is a stopgap, not a solution.
  • The inscriptions imply a system. "Account seven," a numeral, and "the first working" suggest the artifact is one item in a numbered series — and that there are others.
  • Detect Magic says nothing while the object glows. Either it is not magic as Caligo understands magic, or it is hiding.
  • Pass Without Trace has almost certainly expired. It was roughly half spent early in the session and the party has been in the house well over an hour.
  • Magic in the Fold remains a trap. Vivienne has now cast Disguise Self, Light, Detect Magic, and Comprehend Languages inside an ex-inquisitor's house.

Party Resources

  • The artifact — Grey inscribed tablet, ~50 lb, oversized book / pizza-box dimensions, unidentifiable material, no detectable aura, faintly glowing. Carried by Jorath.
  • Inquisition records — Scrolls and tomes on Civilian Relocation Operations taken from the trophy room shelves. Carried by Rookk.
  • Valdren's family effects — Ilivarra's clothing, Phaerun's wooden soldier, Zibrisa's hair pin, plus the name plaques. Taken from the case. Carried alongside Zibrisa's rag doll, Phaerun's broken practice sword, and the sketch of his mother.
  • Potion of healing (minor) — still held by EMBR, unused.
  • 50-foot ropeRookk. The likeliest escape from the second-floor window.
  • Magic lens and Harland's star chart — Jorath.
  • Vivienne — Cast Disguise Self (old maid, still up — not concentration), Light, Detect Magic, Comprehend Languages. Still holds Invisibility, Misty Step, Message, Sending, Speak with Dead. No long rest since the Voss estate.
  • Valdren — Undamaged. Still has Lay on Hands, Channel Divinity, and his second-level slots (attempted Hold Person was not cast). 0 gold. Argentus stabled in town.
  • EMBRRaged once this session (spent on the grapple, not damage). Warhammer, stowed hand axes. Lefty is more awake than it was, and the tendrils have grown toward his collarbone.
  • Rookk — Longsword, heavy armor (stealth disadvantage, now openly acknowledged as a liability). Second Wind status unconfirmed. ~7 gold.
  • Jorath — Burned wild shapes (spider ×2, one regained via a first-level slot), a first-level slot, Calm Emotions, two guiding bolts, Shape Water, Guidance, and his Cosmic Omen (woe) reaction. Carrying the artifact.
  • PositionInside the trophy room, second floor, west side of the front facade. Window open. Two corpses in the room and the den. Lord Crail on the ground floor. Heat 4/6. Clock 6/6 spent.
  • Level-up — The GM indicated the party levels on successfully taking the artifact.
