Lord Oswin Crail

Curt with his guards, curt with his butler, walking like a man who has never once stood at ease.

Overview

Lord Oswin Crail is the master of the Crail Estate, a four-storey manor standing alone on an island of greenery in the wealthy residential district of the Fold. He is ex-garrison and ex-Inquisition — a detail drawn from Harland Ashworth's notes that transformed the party's view of him from oblivious collector to legitimate target.

He is, unknowingly, the custodian of the artifact that unlocks the sealed lower level of Calthar. Harland spent years attempting to buy it from the family and was refused every time.

Appearance

Salt-and-pepper hair cut with military neatness, a trimmed moustache to match. Carries himself with a rigid, welded-straight posture — a man permanently at inspection. Dresses well; changed into evening clothes for a social engagement at 9 p.m.

Personality

Curt and matter-of-fact with everyone beneath him, guards and household staff alike. No wasted words, no wasted motion. The bearing of a career military man who retired into wealth without ever retiring the manner.

The Collection

The Crails are collectors of oddities — ex-garrison money spent on curiosities they do not understand. Harland described the artifact in their possession only as something that does not seem to be of this world. No dimensions, no shape, no material given. The party's entire brief is that they will know it when they see it.

The trophy room sits on the second floor, west side of the front facade — glass display cases visible in silhouette through a window a servant left open to the evening air.

Role in Session 05

  • Identified from Harland's notes as ex-garrison, ex-Inquisition — the fact that settled the party's moral arithmetic and authorized lethal force against anyone who fights.
  • Observed returning home by carriage around midday, met at the door by his butler, curt with both butler and gate guards.
  • Departed again at 9 p.m., changed for a social occasion — putting him out of the house as the heist began.
  • Expected back. The household staff spent the evening lighting lamps and turning down bedrooms for his return, which is what drove the light into the corridors the party needed to cross.

Role in Session 06

  • The trophy room revealed what he actually collects. Alongside the artifact and the curiosities, one display case holds household trinkets taken from families during Inquisition night raids — each object set beside a small plaque bearing the owner's name and age.
  • Among them: the personal effects of Ilivarra, Phaerun, and ZibrisaValdren Zau'tar's mother, brother, and sister, taken twelve years ago.
  • Shelves in the same room held scrolls and tomes documenting Civilian Relocation Operations, the Inquisition's named program for the raids. Jorath judged that the true operational records are kept elsewhere in the house — likely an office the party never reached.
  • Returned home at the very end of the session, handing his coat to his butler on the ground floor while the party stood in his trophy room with two of his guards dead upstairs.

This reframes him entirely. He is not a bystander who happens to own the key — he participated in the raids, kept souvenirs of the families he helped disappear, and catalogued them for his own remembering.

Relationships

  • Harland Ashworth — Refused to sell him the artifact. Never knew what he was refusing.
  • Valdren Zau'tar — Does not know him. Holds trophies taken from his family. Valdren intends to question him if the chance comes.
  • The Crail gate guards — Private security in his employ, not garrison and not Inquisition despite his own history. Both now dead.
  • The Inquisition / The Garrison — Former service in both, including Civilian Relocation Operations.

Role in Session 07

  • Killed in his own collection room (off the recording, per the GM's recap). He came up with guards flanking him and the party was waiting.
  • He could use magic. During the fight he fired a fire bolt out of the window, drawing crowds to the gates and the street.
  • Beheaded and disemboweled. His jeweled gold rings were taken, and the party carried his head out of the Fold.
  • Questioned with Speak with Dead the next morning in a grove beyond Ashmark, by Vivienne disguised as a fellow inquisitor. He answered:
    • The families of heretics are kept at the ID Seven Correctional Annex in the Fold, "a facility only we have access to."
    • Whether they are alive "depends on their usefulness."
    • He bought the artifact decades ago at a friend's private auction, where the garrison sold off the belongings of wasteland travelers of mixed races who had traded everything to be brought over the wall. "I liked the look of it. So I took it."
    • What it does: "Sits on a shelf and looks pretty." He smirked as he said it.
  • Valdren crushed the skull with the blunt side of his war pick before the smirk faded.

Status

Dead. Killed in his home, beheaded, disemboweled, questioned after death, and his skull destroyed. His murder is the likely reason patrols along the edge were agitated the next day.
